Waco Mammoth represented the second new unit of the centennial trip to central and east Texas.
My swing around the state covered 1,900 miles. The route is highlighted on the much abused state map below.
Columbian mammoths like the ones discovered at Waco Mammoth NM were massive animals, standing 14 feet at the shoulder, compared to 10 feet for the wooly mammoth, and weighing up to 20,000 pounds!
An entire nursery herd of Columbian mammoths, 23 in all, died and were fossilized at this site. Although it’s speculation, the most popular theory is that the animals were caught here during a flash flood, drowned and covered by sediment.
